BASILICA DI SAN PAOLO FUORI LE MURA

One of Rome's Major Basilica is the Basilica Di San Paolo Fuori Le Mura (The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls). It was founded in 14th century by Emperor Constantine. It is also the burial place of Saint Paul the Apostle.

After the Saint's  execution and burial in Rome in the 1st century AD, his followers built a shrine over the grave.Overtime due to war or natural destruction it was reconstructed and  restored to its present form today.

It was said that in 1823 a great fire destroyed the Basilica due to workman's negligence. As a result world wide  contributions helped restore the Basilica. The Viceroy of Egypt sent pillars of alabaster, the Emperor of Russia the precious malachite and lapis lazuli of the tabernacle.

Just like the other basilicas, its nave is also very wide and long.  The  baldacchino is in gold.

At one side of the Basilica is The Altar of Conversione.
At the  12th century  cloisters is an  inscription in the mosaics of a poem describing the importance of cloisters in the life of a monk and the use of the cloisters as a place of meditation and study. It encloses a rose garden with the statue of St. Paul at the center.

A set of chains said to be the prison chains of St Paul, used in the last days before his execution are  at the chapel of relics. They are displayed  in the church on his feast days.

How to go to the basilica:
Take the Metro Line B (Blue) for Laurentina and alight at Basilica San Paolo station. When you're up in the street you will immediately see the Basilica's bell tower. (see pic below)
